I sort of wonder if I SHOULD think of them in terms of taming. Still, it's not a word that crosses my mind in relation to my own birds. Add in the large number of older birds were wild-caught and the word "tamed" would technically apply. Obviously parrots are a completely different story from a cat or dog though, as most species lack an extensive history of domestication. We wouldn't say we "tamed" a new puppy or kitten, yet people frequently talk about "taming" a young bird. Most birds these days were born and bred in captivity and ought to be socialized from a very young age. I suppose because when I think of "tame," I think of a creature that has grown to adulthood (or nearly) as a wild animal and only later gone on to trust a human. Tame always struck me as an odd word choice when it comes to pet birds. ![]()
